Supporting LAWS: Making a Difference in Loudoun County
Our Commitment to LAWS
As a long-time resident and real estate professional in Loudoun County, I’m deeply committed to supporting organizations that strengthen our community and provide essential services to those in need. One organization particularly close to my heart is LAWS (Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter), Loudoun County’s designated provider of domestic violence and sexual assault services.
About LAWS
Founded in 1984 by three dedicated Loudoun County women with just $3,000 in donations, LAWS began with a simple but powerful mission: to provide victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse with safety, hope, and empowerment services to live as survivors free from the effects of violence.
Today, LAWS provides comprehensive services to over 1,200 adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence each year. Their work extends beyond emergency shelter to include counseling, legal services, support groups, parenting classes, advocacy, and community outreach programs.
The Impact of LAWS in Our Community
LAWS makes a profound difference in Loudoun County through several key programs:
- Emergency Shelter: LAWS operates a 24-hour crisis hotline and an emergency shelter for those fleeing domestic violence situations.
- The Resourceful Woman Thrift Store: Located in downtown Leesburg, this store offers gently used and new clothing, books, and household items with all proceeds benefiting LAWS’ mission.
- Legal Advocacy: LAWS provides support for victims navigating the legal system, including court accompaniment and assistance with protective orders.
- Loudoun Child Advocacy Center: LAWS runs this center as a public/private partnership dedicated to helping child victims of abuse and neglect.
Why I Support LAWS
As a real estate professional, I understand the fundamental importance of having a safe place to call home. Everyone deserves to live without fear, especially in their own home. The services LAWS provides align perfectly with my personal and professional values of creating secure, nurturing environments where families can thrive.
LAWS is currently working to expand their domestic violence shelter facilities, recognizing that their aging shelter can no longer meet the growing needs of our community. This expansion project is one of many ways the organization continues to adapt and grow to serve Loudoun County residents.
How You Can Help
There are many ways to support LAWS and their vital work:
- Monetary Donations: Donations can be made online through their website, by check, or in person at their Community Services Center located at 105 East Market Street in Leesburg.
- Donate Items: Consider donating gently used clothing, books, and household items to The Resourceful Woman Thrift Store.
- Volunteer Your Time: LAWS relies on dedicated volunteers to help with various programs and services.
- Spread Awareness: Help educate others about domestic violence issues and the resources available through LAWS.
- Real Estate Transactions: When you work with me, I donate a portion of each transaction to local organizations like LAWS that make a meaningful difference in our community.
